I study innovation and digitization in health care markets. I utilize rich institutional details and construct novel data to answer theory-motivated, policy-relevant empirical questions. My empirical tools are causal inferences, structural modeling, machine learning, and experiments. One strand in my research agenda studies the roles of institutions on the diffusion and innovation of medical technologies. For example, a line of my projects examines global drug diffusion and innovation with the Medicines Patent Pool, procurement institutions and essential drug supply in low and middle-income countries, and R&D in the fastly-evolving cannabis market. The other strand in my research agenda studies the consequences of digitization in health care markets. For example, the role of health IT in combating the opioid crisis, the evaluation of the Human Brain Project that provides grants and builds AI-powered platforms for neuroscientists, and mental health App designs to improve patient care and reduce physician burnouts.
