Workshop: Representativeness and transparency of social media

Date

In this workshop, CSSI faculty will discuss representativeness and transparency of social media, and learn about current research projects in this area at UMass.

We will discuss representatives and transparency of social media in the context of the last two U.S. presidential elections. For instance, in the respective election years a few thousands polls surveying voting preferences were published on Twitter. These polls are consistently and significantly biased towards one of the presidential candidates and contain questionable votes, more so before than after the elections. We will discuss potential ramifications of opacity and non-representativeness of social media.
